It was impractical…perhaps even outright delusional…to think I could find the will and/or the words to write a cheery (or depressing) post every day during this strange time. I realized last night while struggling over the most trite of sentences that I was nearly out of words, and what few were left I needed for the book. So I’m reverting to once a week, a post full of poetic, insightful, wise, and… Read More
Tuesday Evening. Neset Camping. Have I said ‘…perfect day’ too often? At this moment I’m in a lovely cabin which is pleasantly familiar because I’ve stayed in it before (miss you, Lace) and it’s cold and windy outside on my private bit of lakeshore and warm and cozily-lit inside (as all the world should be…). Branches of the big fir tree out front are waving vigorously about and the moss-splotched boulder (where… Read More
I quite surprised myself by finding these photos of rain on the train window so beautiful. Hope you enjoy them. I do realize people from rainier climates might not find them so special…but New Mexico friends you may like a raindrop in your day.
The few photos that follow seemed to me to be more abstracted than even the rain-drenched group I called landscapes. So with my eye for art (that’s a joke, okay?) I thought they should have their own post.
Friday I took the train from Stavanger to Kristiansand. It rained hard, downpour-hard, almost all of the way. The trains are clean, cozy and efficient; the countryside is beautiful and yes, most beautiful of all, it rained—snakes and snails and puppy dog tails or, as my Norwegian dad always said, it’s raining pitchforks and ax handles! Of course I took pictures the entire three hours. Because when will I ever see this… Read More
I’m singin’ in the rain Just singin’ in the rain What a glorious feeling I’m happy again I walk down the lane With a happy refrain And singing Singing in the rain In the rain, in the rain, in the rain …Sang Gene Kelly. I woke up this morning to the sound of rain. I wanted to cling to it, keep it from being beamed away by sun. I wanted to lie… Read More
November 24, 2017. Still Thanksgiving evening back home; here in Jaisalmer we’ve moved on. I am so happy to be here…and will be equally (equally plus) happy to be home soon. Here’s a teaser photo of my room at the Mud Mirror Guesthouse and then a long tirade about Indian Rail. This will bring my railroad stories to an end…and let the healing begin. Yesterday. Pollyanna reporting in…if I had not wanted… Read More
November 21, 2017: A little later than the last post! Must be getting homesick… Shower taken, breakfast ordered, weather’s turned chilly, veg omelet looks delicious, rest of the world doesn’t make those puffy watery omelets we get in the States; these are flat and browned with tiny veggies grilled quickly so nothing is runny. Nice that my stomach’s performed as ordered this whole trip—the rule is to hardly ever eat and when… Read More
WHAT A SAD TIME FOR MYANMAR…IN 2017 I VISITED THIS ENCHANTING COUNTRY FOR A FEW DAYS. IT IS UNIQUE…A MYSTICAL SENSE OF PLACE…A SPECIAL PLACE I THINK. AND NOW A GANG OF BRUTAL FRIGHTENED MEN ARE DETERMINED TO DESTROY WHAT IS GOOD ABOUT THIS BEAUTIFUL LAND…WITHOUT EVER ACKNOWLEDGING OR HAVING TO ACCOUNT FOR THE SINS AGAINST THE ROHINGYA OR THE MILITARY’S MANY OTHER FAILURES. November 10, 2017: Sakura Inn, Bagan, Myanmar: Out and… Read More
Lobby coffee/bar at Hotel Budapest in Moscow. 9:30am. So what do I want, conference hotel with super service or funky gray-toned with surly service? I can do this I can I can…. Had a compartment mate again last night. Pretty young blonde woman with very curly hair who talked long into the night to her boyfriend but Russian is a nice background sound, soft and even melodic, odd isn’t? Bigger train car,… Read More
