A few years ago, I made an ‘art trip’ to Jakarta for a conference, Singapore for a festival and Taipei to meet dancers. The trip was not especially successful in terms of bringing artists to Albuquerque but it was fascinating, mostly in a good way, on several levels. As mentioned previously I loved Taipei; it’s vitality and variety. Singapore was a different cup of tea but beautifully contemporary and rich and clean (remember this is the city-state where chewing gum is prohibited!) The festival was most interesting with a company from mainland China the most envelope-pushing and a possibility for presenting in the U.S. Unfortunately the company wasn’t at all communicative and besides I couldn’t imagine the difficulty of actually setting up such a tour. The only big disappointment was Jakarta and the conference. Really spectacularly bad hotel, meetings only mildly interesting, and well…I was in a very disconnected mood/place by then. Besides I had been to Indonesia (Bali, Yogyakarta) years earlier so it wasn’t even a new passport stamp! I did go to a striking contemporary art show in Singapore and have included several photos. Enjoy.
